Premier League and Football League 2007 - 2008

The top level clubs continue to be courted by the big, multinational sportswear companies, Nike, Adidas and Puma, all of whom have introduced sleek designs this season. Umbro introduced a new template featuring diamonds across the shoulder and an intricate, patterned side panel, an approach that runs counter to the trend for simplified designs and has had a mixed reception from fans. New Zealand sportswear company, Canterbury (better known for supplying international rugby kits) have made an appearance with their new design for Portsmouth.

Lower down the leagues, the smaller companies such as Errea, Vandanel and Carlotti have captured a greater share of the market with some distinctive new designs. Several clubs have gone for asymmetric kits, notably Northampton, Tranmere Rovers, Shrewsbury, Wrexham and, most dramatically, Carlisle Utd, while the majority have adopted flowing trims on shirts and shorts. The trend for "heritage" kits has gained strength: Barnet, Bradford City, Burnley, Ipswich, Millwall and Rochdale have all adopted kits based on earlier designs while Macclesfield's dramatic new shirts are supposed to evoke a skein of silk.
