Although the United States played well the Dutch had a professional edge, playing patient football waiting for the moment to pounce. The first of these came in the tenth minute. After passing the ball back and forth in their own half, the Dutch quickened the pace and passed right through the United States' defence for Depay to finish. In added time the Dutch struck again with another display of precision passing. With 15 minutes to go Wright put the US back in the match with a freakish goal that flicked up off his heel and over the goalkeeper. Five minutes later, however, Dumfries, unmarked at the far post, volleyed home to kill off the game.

Playing some spellbinding football, Argentina built a two-goal lead courtesy of Messi (35') and Alvarez (57'). In the second half they peppered the Australian goal but the Socceroos plugged away and managed to steal a goal when Fernandez deflected a fierce shot from Goodwin into his own net (77'). In the final seconds Australia almost had an unlikely equaliser when Kuol found himself on the ball with only the goalkeeper to beat but his effort was blocked by Martinez.

This was a far better performance from Poland than they had shown in the group matches largely because the players had decided to ignore their coach's instructions. It still was not enough to overcome the World Champions for whom Mbappe was in sparkling form, adding two goals to his tally. With 90 minutes played, France were cruising when Mbappe received the ball in Poland's box and curled an unstoppable shot into the far corner. There was a moment of farce at the end of an extended period of added time when the ball struck Upamecano's hand as he tried to turn away from Grosicki's cross. After reviewing the footage the referee awarded a penalty. Lewandowski's kick was saved by Lloris but a retake was ordered because the 'keeper was off his line and this time Lewandowski made no mistake.

In the opening stages, England dominated, harrying the Senegalese to deny them possession and moving the ball around with confidence. Gradually, however, Senegal found their feet and began to look threatening so it was a relief for English supporters when Henderson broke the deadlock in the 39th minute after some incisive passing. In added time Kane made it 2-0. In the second-half England were firmly in control and scored again through Saka (57'). England applied cruise control and, despite some robust challenges by both sides, played keep-ball until the final whistle.

Urged on by their passionate supporters who managed to sing the same wordless song for the duration of the match to unvarying drum accompaniment, Japan ran Croatia ragged for much of the game. The Samurai Blue deservedly took the lead two minutes from half-time from a well-worked corner. Croatia did not panic and continued to play patient football and in the 55th minute, after a period of aimless passing, Lovren played a long ball into the box where Perisic finished with a brilliant header. Both sides had chances but couldn't put them away and the match went to extra time and then to penalties. All Japan's hard work now went for nothing as their players made a complete hash of things, missing three out of their first four penalties.

Brazil cruised through the match, easily outclassing their opponents with some elegant football and ruthless finishing. Four goals up after 36 minutes, they could take it easy in the second half which was enlivened by a terrific long range drive by Seung-Ho Paik to give South Korea a consolation goal.

Morocco pulled off one of the biggest shocks of this or any other World Cup by knocking out Spain. Their tactics were to defend and look to score on the break. They had just 24% of the possession and mustered only four goal attempts of which two were on target. Spain had 12 attempts but only one on target, indicating that Morocco's approach was effective. So it came down to penalties and as happened at Al Wakrah the previous day, the favourites bottled it, failing to score from their first three kicks.

Ronaldo was dropped after a display of petulance when he was substituted in Portugal's final group game and his colleagues demonstrated that they could get on perfectly well without him, thank you very much. His replacement, Matias Goncalo Ramos scored a hat-trick as Portugal overwhelmed the Swiss.

Croatia matched Brazil for long periods and while the South Americans had the better chances, Croatia dominated the midfield. In extra-time the match burst into life after Neymar ran through the Croatian defence and put Brazil ahead in added time at the end of the first period of extra-time. It looked as if Brazil would coast to victory but with four minutes to go Gvardiol disposessed Fred, then Modric sent a perfect pass into space that split the defence and Vlasic scored. When Livakovic, who had been outstanding, saved Brazil's first penalty the writing was on the wall. Croatia scored with their first four kicks so when Marquinhos hit the post with his penalty Brazil's tournament was over.

This thriliing match had everything: flying tackles, a dramatic come-back, 17 yellow cards and one red and moments of sheer bedlam. In the 35th minute Messi shimmied his way past the Dutch defence and sent a perfectlly weighted pass to Molina who scored. Messi made it 2-0 with a 73rd minute penalty. The Netherlands now went route one and Weghorst pulled one back with a flick from a long cross. In the 89th minute Paredes fouled Ake and then hoofed the ball at the Dutch bench who immediately all rushed on to the pitch. Order was soon restored but there would now be 10 minutes of added time. In the last of these Koopmeiners took a free-kick on the edge of the D. Instead of trying to get the ball over the wall, he cleverly rolled it forward to Weghorst who took a touch and slid it past the keeper. Argentina dominated extra-time and were denied by the post in the final seconds. The South Americans held their nerve in the shoot-out, winning 4-3.

In front of a jubilant crowd, Morocco made history by becoming the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-finals. They achieved this through obdurate defence and sheer grit. En-Nesiri put Morocco ahead in the 43rd minute, out jumping the defending goalkeeper to head home. In the 51st minute Ronaldo was brought on from the bench to save the game but aside from a last minute effort, saved by Bonou, he could not find a way through. Even after losing substitute Cheddira, booked twice in as many minutes, the Moroccan defenders held firm.

An eagerly awaited match reached half-time with France leading by a single goal, a great long range effort by Tchouameni. Nine minutes into the second half Saka was brought down in the French area and Kane cooly converted the penalty. In the 78th minute France took the lead again with a powerful close range header from Giroud. Minutes later Hernandez barged into Mount and after a VAR check, the referee awarded another penalty to England. The normally utterly reliable Kane this time misjudged his strike and sent his kick high over the cross bar. Despite 11 minutes of added time, England could not find a way through and went out of the competition in yet another heroic failure.

Croatia's ironclad midfield had brought them this far and it took the brilliance of Lionel Messi to unlock it. After Croatia dominated the opening phases Alvarez sprinted behind their defence and was tripped in the area. Messi studied the ball for a few moments before firing off an unstoppable penalty. Five minutes later Messi gave a deep pass to Alvarez who set off in a straight line for 60 metres, the Croatian defenders retreating before him. He crash-tackled the last two defenders, somehow recovering the ball each time, before delicately slipping it past the keeper. At 2-0 down, Croatia's limitations were exposed and they never looked capable of scoring. With 69 minutes gone, Messi led Gvardiol ino the box, jinking, paused and accelerated before twisting round and rolling the ball back to Alvarez for the killer punch.

In the fifth minute Mbappe had two shots blocked and the ball ricocheted to Hernandez who managed to get over the bouncing ball and smash it home. Lesser teams might have crumbled at this point but Morocco showed their quality and stood toe-to-toe with France. Just before half-time Jawad El Jamiq's specacular bicycle kick slammed onto the post after Lloris got a hand to the ball. After the break Morocco had France on the rack but after half-an-hour or so France regained the initiative and in the 79th minute Muani scored with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. Morocco still did not give up and in the dying seconds Hamdallah had a close range shot blocked on the French goal line.

In the seventh minute Croatia were awarded a free-kick some 30 meters from goal which Majer lifted over the wall for Perisic to flick the ball off his head towards Gvardiol whose diving header beat Bono for one of the goals of the tournament. Almost immediately Morocco equalised when Dari reacted first to a misplaced clearance to head home from five meters. Three minutes from half-time Orsic restored Croatia's lead with an exquisitely placed shot that went in off the far post. Both sides had good chances in the second-half but there was no further scoring.

For 80 minutes France did not have a single goal attempt and Argentina, sitting on a 2-0 lead, were cruising. Their second, scored by Di Maria (36') came from a briliant passing move that swept the length of the pitch without a defender coming near the ball. Finally Mbappe took the game by the scruff of the neck, scoring twice in a minute. In extra-time the game swept from end to end and in the 109th minute Messi bundled the ball over the line after Lloris parried Martinez's shot. Ten minutes later Mbappe's shot cannoned against Montiel's elbow for a penalty, which Mbappe converted for his hat-trick. Both teams came close in the dying moments but the match went to penalties. Argentina held their nerve but the French, affected by Martinez's mind games, missed twice and when Montiel confidently rolled his kick home, Argentina became world champions for the third time.
